Retirement Villages - Levels of Care

The levels of care that the retirement villages endow their residents have been coined with various terms. It is classified into different units.

  • Independent living units
  • These units are also known as “self-care units”. So far, this is the classification that gives the most basic level of care. However, a wide range of other personal services can be requested under a “flexicare” arrangement and will of course require payment for every service rendered.

  • Hostels and Nursing Homes
  • Hostels and nursing homes are subsidized by the Commonwealth Government to a certain extent. These accommodations are also oftentimes confused as independent living units because of the very fundamental levels of care provided. Admission criteria are set by the government in order to qualify for this program.

  • Assisted living units
  • These units are also termed as “serviced apartments”, which bestows the highest level of care to its residents.

There are basically two kinds of retirement village:

  • Assisted living units
  • These are possessed and controlled by the private sector paying for the accommodation and services. It can also be run by non-profit organizations that are expecting for a so-called “surplus”

  • Donor funded
  • Customarily, these are owned and managed by “non-profit” groups.  They consist of helpful financial assistance, and admission to these donor-funded villages is normally limited to the disadvantaged populace.
